Synopsis

Set in rural Tennessee, Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah tells the story of Susannah Polk, a spirited young woman whose innocence and independence make her an outsider in her deeply religious community.

When a group of church elders discovers Susannah bathing nude in a secluded creek, they seize upon the incident as evidence of immorality. Gossip quickly spreads, and the community turns against her. Pressured to confess sins she has not committed, Susannah refuses, even as she becomes increasingly isolated.

The charismatic traveling preacher Reverend Olin Blitch arrives to lead a revival and joins the campaign to force Susannah’s repentance. But after confronting her alone, Blitch realizes that she has been telling the truth—and that the community’s accusations are false. His remorse comes too late. Susannah’s brother, Sam, returns to find his sister devastated and takes justice into his own hands.

Inspired by the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders, Susannah is a powerful exploration of hypocrisy, intolerance, sexual repression, and the devastating consequences of mob judgment. Blending American folk influences with sweeping lyricism, Floyd’s opera remains one of the most frequently performed and enduring works in the American operatic repertoire.
